The Wiregrass Museum of Art in Dothan is showcasing Troy student artwork in its newest exhibition.
The museum will be premiering a new exhibit titled “Explorations Through Printmaking.”
The prints used within the showcase are pieces created by students of Beverly West Leach, a lecturer of Art and Design at Troy University.
Leach is also a member of the board of directors and on the collections committee for the museum.
“The director, Dana Lemmer, had reached out to me and asked me, ‘What am I doing in my classes?’” Leach said.
“I asked her if there’d be an opportunity to use the lower-level gallery space for my students in printmaking, because as I saw the work they were doing, I was getting more and more excited.
“I thought, ‘Oh, why not use my relationship in the community, to promote my students and promote Troy University, as well.’”
Throughout the fall 2021 semester, Leach began to select her printmaking students’ work to be showcased in the future exhibit.
The pieces ended up varied in both medium and subject matter.
Leach said, “What I did is, as the students did work, I set their strongest pieces aside…and throughout the semester, as I saw strong images, I would send them on to Dana so she knew we were on track to have a show.”
A few students such as Camille Kroeger, who is a senior art education major from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, will have her pieces “Entrapment” and “Mountain Night” featured, as well as Jennifer McCohnell, a senior studio art major with 3D concentration, from Dothan, with her landscape print “Los Pirineos.”
“The Wiregrass Museum is a special space, and I am honored to know that mine and my classmate’s work can inspire from within its walls,” said Anna Segars, a sophomore studio art major with a 2D concentration from Trussville, Alabama whose self-portrait monoprint is featured in the show.
“As an aspiring artist it is thrilling to have my work in an art museum!”
There are many more students whose work is being shown in the Wiregrass Museum of Art, and Leach encourages all Troy students to visit and view the work her students put into their art.
As a closing message, Leach said, “What I’d like the campus at large to know is Malone Hall is rocking it and there’s lots of art happening!”
